The "China issue" heats up on the campaign trail
As we observed last week, the Obama and Romney campaigns are trading jabs about how they would tackle U.S. trade with China.
Bloomberg News has reported on this ongoing China debate, saying that the "rhetoric on China is escalating as the two candidates appeal to voters hurt by the decline in US manufacturing":
Two of Mitt Romney’s first three television ads of the general-election campaign boast of how he’d stand up to China as soon as he becomes president.
Not to be outdone, President Barack Obama last week capped off a month during which he imposed or proposed duties on Chinese goods by warning their leaders to end unfair practices.
The Bloomberg piece is interesting because it specifically quotes Barack Obama's campaign comments in April 2008 when, at a candidates' forum hosted by the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), Obama called President Bush a "patsy" on trade with China.
As the U.S. trade deficit with China continues to climb, it's likely the "China issue" will continue to be prominent news.
