Celebrating Bagpipe Appreciation Day? Keep it Made in the USA!

By Lauren Donia

This Saturday is Bagpipe Appreciation day, which gives people a special reason to celebrate their Scottish heritage, or just to impress friends with an offbeat talent. But no matter how you honor this interesting holiday, make sure your instrument was American-made.

Despite what you may think, there are manufacturers of bagpipes here in the United States. Gibson Bagpipes, made in Willoughby, Ohio, is a good option. Jerry Gibson moved here from Scotland in the 70’s and began handcrafting Scottish-style Great Highland Bagpipes in the early 80’s.

Gibson Bagpipes are sold through BagpipeBand.com, a subsidiary of Symphony Studios, Inc, which was started 15 years ago by Gary Guth and his wife. Bonus: Guth, a full time bagpiper, is available to perform at events, gives private lessons, and sells other equipment. Looking to rent a kilt? He's got that, too.

Whether you are a bagpipe beginner or a longtime enthusiast, the website has everything you need to properly appreciate this ancient musical device while supporting American manufacturing.
