Society for Manufacturing Engineers website helps kids discover the “cool” side of manufacturing

Here at ManufactureThis we’ve always known that manufacturing is important, but it’s not always easy to convey to how challenging and interesting high-tech manufacturing can be as a career option.

To help change this, the Society for Manufacturing Engineers has produced a new website, manufacturingiscool.com. Their interactive site is as engaging as it is educational.  Through an interactive “desk,” kids (and parents) can learn about everything from how paper and Pringles are made to what kinds of manufacturing-focused summer programs are offered in their area.

Tools like these are great for getting kids excited about manufacturing, but as Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) Executive Director Scott Paul recently pointed out in a Huffington Post op-ed, we also need the help of Congress to create a strong manufacturing workforce for the future. It’s time for lawmakers to shift some educational investment to rebuilding our vocational and technical skills programs in order to address looming shortages of qualified workers needed in the manufacturing sector.
