Another big issue this week to consider

Another thing to consider this week: a new trade law can unfairly impact small manufacturing companies. Some in Congress are rushing to pass trade legislation, aimed at taking on the Chinese, that in reality puts American jobs at risk and violates US trade policy and WTO agreements. The key elements of this legislation have not been fully aired in Congressional hearings and the potential for significant damage to our economy has not been fully considered.

Simply put, the so-called GPX bill doesn't comply with WTO agreements, could set off a trade war at a time when our economy is in fragile recovery, and unfairly applies trade laws, punishing US companies, like Maine Industrial Tire in Red Lion, PA, or Plasticoid Manufacutring, a veteran-owned, two generation minority business in Conn.

An op-ed in Forbes called the bill unnecessary. A front page article in the York Daily Record of Pennsylvania literally showed the impact it will have on jobs in that state. A recent Brattle Group study showed that over 50,000 jobs will be impacted in the solar manufacturing industry alone, at a time when the government is trying to promote green jobs. If legislation is needed, then Congress should take a moment to consider its impact and understand the ramifications.
