The economy contracted at the fastest pace in 27 years in the first quarter of 2008. GDP contracted at an annual rate of 6.1 percent.

Sen. Arlen Specter joins the Democratic Party after 40 years as a Republican. President Obama and Vice President Biden offered Specter a warm welcome. The President said he looks forward to working with Sen. Specter on “expanding the manufacturing base.”
