A new Mellman Group and Public Opinion Strategies national survey of 1,200 likely voters concludes that 63 percent of participants believe we should either keep the China tariffs or give the tariffs more time. The survey also found that 54 percent of participants are more worried about unfair trade than a trade war (37 percent).
Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) President Scott Paul said:
"Candidates who speak out against the tariffs between now and the election will be out of touch with American voters. Majorities or pluralities of all persuasions—Republicans, Democrats, and Independents—want to keep the tariffs in place or at least give them more time.
"There’s a major disconnect between some media portrayals and inside-the-Beltway chatter, and what American voters actually think about China, unfair trade practices, and pushing back with tariffs.
"Even in this era of upended politics, pushing back against unfair trade practices is an issue that largely unites American voters.”
BACKGROUND: This national survey polled 1,200 likely 2018 general election voters from Aug. 28 through Sept. 9, 2018. Survey interviews were conducted on both land-lines and cellphones, using a registration-based sample. The margin of error for is +/-2.8% at the 95% level of confidence, and is higher for subgroups.
