Its goods are stylish and sustainable, but Mountain Mindful’s social enterprise mission is what really warrants your attention. The brand hires people “who face barriers to unemployment (such as Substance Abuse Disorder or former Coal-Economy workers)” to model West Virginia’s post-coal future. Its employees, or “crew members,” earn an Associate’s Degree at the end of their 2.5-year contracts with a unique work-school hybrid program. Every week, crew members participate in 33 hours of paid work, six credit hours of higher education, and three hours of personal development mentorship.
