American Optical

Vernon Hills, Illinois

About American Optical

American Optical (AO) has made eyewear in the United States since 1833 (!!!) and is a big part of the American story. The first company to provide goggles to U.S. military pilots, AO claims to have created the aviator style of sunglasses with those it began making for U.S. Army Air Corps pilots in 1935. Dwight Eisenhower, Ted Williams, Robert DeNiro, and John F. Kennedy are among the luminaries known to have worn the brand’s glasses, and AO made a special set for the Apollo 11 crew (now are on display on the Smithsonian). AO frames are still American-made, at a facility in Chicago. (As a note, while all of AO’s frames are made in the U.S., they are made with imported materials, and their lenses are manufactured abroad).
