Washington, D.C. — The Alliance for American Manufacturing applauds Sens. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) and Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and members of the Senate Commerce Committee for advancing the Connected Vehicle Security Act on Wednesday. It now heads to the full Senate for further action. If made law, the bipartisan bill will codify and strengthen an existing Commerce Department rule that bans connected vehicles, software and hardware linked to China.
“We applaud Senators Moreno and Slotkin for championing American workers,” Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul said. “Congress has taken a major step to safeguard the 11 million American jobs that the U.S. auto supply chain supports. Our national security and economic strength depend on this lynchpin industry.”
China’s massive vehicle excess production has already hit the European Union, where European Commission leaders are warning that the EU’s auto industry faces “mortal danger” from Chinese electric vehicle dumping. Meanwhile, Volkswagen is considering plans to shut down four of its German auto plants and eliminate up to 100,000 jobs.
“We cannot afford to allow the Chinese auto import flood to hit U.S. shores,” Paul said. “Our workers are the best in the world, but Beijing has played every trick in the book to advantage its state-backed auto manufacturers. Allowing Chinese autos to enter our market would set the U.S. into a rigged game that stakes our nation’s whole future.”
As the Connected Vehicle Security Act advances, AAM urges Congress to take further action to block Chinese-made connected vehicles that weigh more than 10,000 pounds, such as buses and commercial trucks, from the U.S.
