Factories Lose 36,000 Jobs in October

Washington, D.C. – Manufacturing employment dropped in October, with the sector losing 36,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The bulk of the job loss occurred in motor vehicles and parts, which lost 41,000 jobs.

Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul said:

"The autoworkers' strike largely explains manufacturing job losses in October. That said, the rest of the factory jobs data was stagnant, as it has been for much of the year. Key electoral states like Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania have been losing factory jobs this year. These states and workers need Congress and the president to complete a robust infrastructure bill and secure a real China trade deal – one that will do more than promise some farm purchases and kick the can down the road on the really tough issues like China's massive industrial subsidies."
