July Factory Job Numbers Reminder of Needed Decisive Action from Administration

Washington, D.C. – Employment in the U.S. manufacturing sector grew little in July, gaining just 16,000 new jobs, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced today. For comparison, 2018 saw factory job gains averaging 22,000 per month.

Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul said:

"July’s employment report shows that factory jobs continue to underperform in 2019 compared to last year. The slowing economy has contributed to this underperformance, but the administration has also committed some serious unforced errors: Promising big changes on trade outcomes, but delivering only an erratic tariff policy so far; and talking up $2 trillion in infrastructure investment, but not following it up with a real plan or leadership.

"We want to see a surge in reshoring and new manufacturing jobs, but the administration’s policies have fallen short of getting us there."
