Senate Fails to Pass Portman-Stabenow Currency Amendment: AAM Statement

Washington, D.C. – The Senate today failed to pass the Portman-Stabenow currency amendment, which would have combated currency manipulation with strong and enforceable provisions in Trade Promotion Authority (TPA).

Said Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul:

“The Senate failed American manufacturers and workers today by not including strong, enforceable currency provisions in TPA. The Trans-Pacific Partnership will not live up to the hype because the most significant 21st century barrier to trade – currency manipulation – was left out. A stacked deck won’t allow our nation to enjoy the benefits of expanded trade.”

Nine in 10 Americans say it is important to have rules to prevent currency manipulation. Stopping currency manipulation in the TPP could create millions of jobs.
