Senate Votes to Strengthen Domestic Trade Laws: AAM Statement

The legislation must now pass the House.

Washington, D.C. – The Senate passed the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act today, strengthening our domestic trade laws and combating currency manipulation. While this is a win for American manufacturers and workers, it is by no means a final victory. The House now must pass this important legislation.

Said Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul:

“We’re pleased the Senate passed this important trade enforcement bill, but the job isn’t done. The overwhelming bipartisan vote will be viewed by American workers and manufacturers as nothing more than a cynical ploy unless the House of Representatives swiftly considers the Senate bill. We are confident of an overwhelming bipartisan vote in the House if Speaker Boehner allows it.

“With millions of jobs at stake, we hope the White House will find a way to work with the majority of lawmakers who want to see these meaningful changes. Currency manipulation and trade enforcement must also be addressed as a part of Trade Promotion Authority legislation, or trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership will fail to deliver for American workers.”

Nine in 10 Americans say it is important to have rules to prevent currency manipulation. Stopping currency manipulation in the TPP could create millions of jobs
